Healthy Holidays

A quick checklist to take note the health aspect while preparing for your holidays :

Pre Tour
  • Buy Travel Insurance. Travel insurance varies with companies thus do check that the medical coverage is suitable for you and covers the activities that you will be doing during the trip.
  • Visit Your Doctor. At least 4 - 6 weeks before your travel, consult your doctor on the type of vaccinations that you would need for the country that you intend to visit.  If you have existing medical condition, you can get a health check clearance or health advice.  To avoid any issue with customs clearing, you may wish to get certification from your doctor on the type of medicine that you will be bringing on board.
  • Pack Medical Kit.  This will come handy for common travel ailments such as colds, diarrhoea, headaches, motion sickness, cuts and wounds. Wet tissues or sanitiser are useful to keep your hands clean especially in places where cleaning facilities are not readily available.
  • Check weather conditions. Bring clothes that are appropriate to the temperature especially if you are going for winter holidays.

During Flight
  • Keep Warm.  Ensure that your jacket/warm clothing is within reach as you may need it when the temperature falls during the flight. If you are travelling from a hot season directly to a winter season (with below 0 degree temperature), it is advisable to wear your warm clothing on the plane (ie before you touch ground the airport) to avoid the drastic change of temperature to your body.
  • Avoid Excessive Alcohol.  Do control your alcohol intake as you would not want to get drunk or feel sick before you start your holidays!
  • Walk About.  You may be relaxing with the in-flight shows, do remember to get out of your seat for some walking especially when you are on long-haul flights. Sitting still in the same position for a long period of time such as flight, car or coach can lead to deep vein thrombosis.

During Tour
  • Wash Your Hands.  Yes, you are on holidays and get excited with trip activities - be it theme rides, shopping, exploring places of interests or simply at the beach etc.... Don't forget the good habit of washing hands or use of sanitiser/wipes to clean your hands.
  • Drink Clean Water.  Keep your body hydrated at all times with clean bottled or boiled water, avoid ice cubes when you are not sure whether it is made from clean water.
  • Eat Cooked Food.  Eat sensibly - avoid raw food (if you are not sure of the hygiene level) or over-eating will save you the trouble of having diarrhoea or diseases during the trip.
  • Eat Fruits.  Your body need to adjust to the diet which may differ from what you used to eat in your home country.  To avoid constipation, eat more fruits on top of drinking clean water every day.
  • Go Swimming/Gym.  Where possible, slot in time for some exercises at the gym or swimming to keep fit during the trip.
